For months I’ve been staring at my stash of plastic bottle caps – wondering what the heck am I going to do with those things. I’m not talking about the caps from water and drink bottles. Those are pretty easy to find uses for. I’m talking about the plastic tops that come on spray paints, laundry detergents and cooking sprays. I try very hard NOT to buy things with those types of tops because I know most are not recyclable. But every now and again, they end up in my house – and then I become obsessed with finding a clever use for them.
The cap that has all my attention for this craft is one that came on a bottle of cooking spray. (I didn’t buy it. My cooking spray is a pump and it’s refillable. Just sayin’.) My first thought was that it could be a holder of some sort for my desk. I could throw paper clips or loose change in there. But that’s boring. I needed some inspiration…and it came to me at Trader Joe’s! I was shopping there one day and saw an array of adorable, potted, mini flowers. I saw a sweet yellow one that reminded me of the yellow plastic cap sitting on my desk – just waiting to be crafted into something beautiful. So I thought, I could use that cap as a planter! The teeny-tiny flower from TJ’s would go perfectly in there. And I barely have to do anything but transplant the thing! So simple. So adorable. So green! You only need a few things to make these DIY flower pots
plastic caps small flowers drill + small drill bits (The size will depend on the size of your cap. You’ll be drilling 3 holes, so choose the size that would allow that many in the bottom of your bottle cap.) plastic jar lid (Like from a peanut butter jar.)

You can put these little DIY flower pots just about anywhere. But I think they make great teacher gifts or pretend play doll accessories in a kids room. Also, I’m not exactly sure what type of flower I picked up at Trader Joe’s for this project. I’m almost positive it’s a flowering Kalanchoe. But whatever you pick, make sure it’s low maintenance. And a great place to look for mini plants is at the home improvement store. They have awesome garden centers.
