I love the idea of decorating for St. Patrick’s day, but I wanted to create a decor project that didn’t scream “shamrock!” Plus, I wanted to keep the decor up all of March, not just for St. Patrick’s Day. Garlands are super simple to make, yet make a huge statement on my mantle, so I went with an awesome DIY recycled garland that has tons of texture and pizazz!
What You Will Need:
- Magazines
- Book pages or other recycled paper
- School glue. If you can, use eco glue.
- Hot glue/hot glue gun
- Twine. For a more eco-friendly option, use hemp twine.
- Green vintage buttons. If you don’t have any buttons on hand, you can make your own buttons from eco-friendly materials!
How To Do It:
Go through your magazines and pick out pages that have primarily green images.
Cut 7-10 circles out of your green magazine pages. I cut out 7 because that’s how many could fit across my mantle.
Cut 7-10 smaller circles out of your book pages.
With the school glue, glue the book page circles to the middle of the magazine page circles.
To add dimension, I cut the edges of the magazine circles and then crinkled the edges like so:
Hot glue a few green vintage buttons to the middle of the book page circles. Now you should have a cute green flower.
Hot glue each “flower” to the twine. Make sure you glue them evenly. I did around 4 inches in between each of my flowers. Once the glue has dried, your garland is ready to be hung! You can hang it on your mantle like I did, on the front of a piece of furniture, or simply on your wall. My garland looks very “springy” so I might keep it up for a while!
