What You Will Need:

  1. A french door

  2. Chalkboard paint

  3. 4 hooks and one drawer handle (pictured below). You can find these at your local hardware store.

  4. Drill or screwdriver

  5. Sandpaper

  6. Painter’s tape

  7. Recycled paper (like newspaper or junk mail)

  8. Chalk

  9. A homemade window cleaner

  10. A printer and eco-friendly ink to print pictures of your family and friends!

  11. Tape

How To Do It:

  1. Lightly sand your door. If your door has any large nicks or scratches, make sure you sand them out. Your door will become a writing surface, so you will want it to be as smooth as possible.

  2. Clean the door of any dust or debris with an all purpose cleaner and rag.

  3. With your painter’s tape and recycled paper, tape off/cover the glass panes of the door. This is my door with the painter’s tape (I hadn’t put on the recycled paper yet):

  4. Chalkboard paint it! When finished, remove the painter’s tape and recycled paper off of the glass panes.

  5. As I always say for chalkboard paint projects, follow the directions on your chalkboard paint can as far as cure time goes. Mine required for me to wait 24 hours before writing on the chalkboard. Then, it said to cover the entire surface with chalk before writing on it.

  6. Once your chalkboard paint has completely dried, it’s time to add your hooks and drawer handle. Decide where you want your hooks to be, and then drill them into place. Then, drill the drawer handle upside down in front of the knob hole. You don’t have to add the drawer handle, but I think it’s a cute place to put chalk and it disguises the knob hole.

  7. Print out pictures of your family and friends to fill the glass panes. Turn the door over, cut your photos to the size of the pane, and tape the photo to the surrounding edge of the pane. Unfortunately, my printer stopped working, so my panes are empty for now!

  8. Write on it! You can leave little notes and reminders above your child’s backpack, or just draw something pretty!

You can mount the door to your wall with heavy duty screws (which I suggest if you have children), or simply prop it up against a wall. Isn’t it so fun?
