Here is how to use freezer paper to make a few types of templates or appliques.
1. Names or initials
Print out the name or initials you want to use. Place the shiny part of the freezer down on the template and trace it using pencil. This step is not necessary if you are artistic and can draw the letters right onto the freezer paper. Then, using sharp and pointy scissors, cut out the letters.
Next, iron the template, shiny side down onto the fabric you want to use as an applique. Then, cut it out. For small shapes, it’s best to baste the applique and then sew it onto the fabric you want to use. Next »
2. Fabric shapes
If you want to use an applique from a particular fabric you like, first iron the freezer paper, shiny side down on the wrong side of the fabric. Turn it over, and cut out the applique. The freezer paper creates a stiffer fabric, making it easier to cut out the shape, especially around any intricate corners and curves. Next »
3. Tracing
Another way to create a template is to trace directly from a design you like, directly onto the freezer paper. Then, iron the freezer paper, shiny side down onto a fabric you want to create the applique. Cut out the fabric, leaving about 1/4″ seam allowance around the applique. Fold the seam allowance over the freezer paper template, and sew the applique onto the surface of whatever you want the applique to be on, leaving a hole through which you can take out the freezer paper through. 4. Stencils
You can stencil with freezer paper. Cut out any shape with an exacto knife, iron the shiny side down, then paint with fabric paint. Peel off the freezer paper and you have an instant semi-silk screened pattern. Next »
5. Miscellaneous
You can use freezer paper to cover up a craft area. You can also use the shiny side as a paint pallet in a pinch.
